Holder of the Ganden throne
Ganden Tripa means holder of the Ganden throne. The office succeeds to Tsongkhapa’s seat and is the formal spiritual headship of Gelug. It should not be imagined as unlimited administrative command over every teacher and monastery, which maintain their own responsibilities.
The early succession
The conventional enumeration begins with Tsongkhapa, followed by Gyaltsab Je Darma Rinchen and Khedrub Je Gelek Palsang. The institution developed over subsequent generations. Present-day procedures cannot simply be projected back onto the fifteenth century; a complete list of office holders requires individual verification.
From scholarship to service
Descriptions of the institutional path include extensive study, geshe qualifications, tantric-college training and service in teaching or leadership. Scholarship, seniority and communal responsibility work together. There is no single examination granting immediate succession, nor one fixed duration for every individual’s career.
Two lines and a term of office
The Shartse and Jangtse Choje offices, associated respectively with the Gyuto and Gyumed lines, alternate in the succession. Modern descriptions commonly refer to a seven-year term. Death and other circumstances can affect transitions; the entire historical succession should not be portrayed as an uninterrupted seven-year timetable.
An office is not an incarnate lineage
The throne is not itself an incarnate succession, although an individual holder may also be recognized as a tulku. Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama lineages, abbatial offices, geshe qualifications and the Ganden throne are different categories. Keeping them distinct prevents common misunderstandings.
Current information and further study
As checked in September 2026, the Geluk International Foundation identifies the 105th Ganden Tripa, Lobsang Dorjee. The supplied draft’s reference to the 104th as current is outdated.
